An Insider Look into How Music Inspires Me

Today I wanted to give you a little bit of insider information about my writing process. One thing I do for almost every book is make a Spotify playlist. For Room for Two More, my current Harlequin release, I wanted music to reflect the tropes, as my characters go from one night to forever and they are getting back on their feet after a tragedy. If you click the link, it’ll take you to my Spotify.

First, I started with all-time favorite of mine, Eddie Money’s classic with Ronnie Spector, “Take Me Home Tonight.” This hits the tropes as it’s a duet (Lexi was part of a singing duo). Then I move into Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away,” which was a classic even before the first Top Gun movie. It’s how Lexi feels about Liam, and he her. They simply can’t resist each other. Next I move through Genesis’s “Invisible Touch,” which is how they can’t stop thinking of each other, especially when they reunite. Liam tells her she’d not a “Drive By,” to him, especially once he learns her condition.
Then the real work begins, which is why there’s Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb,” and then the story shifts to Colorado, and some classics from Joe Walsh and John Denver. I don’t want to spoil the rest of the playlist, but it ends with a favorite that John Rzeznik wrote for the movie Treasure Planet, which is “I’m Still Here.” It’s how both feel, that they’ve been given a fresh start and made it. It’s honestly one of my favorite anthems, and it’s so underappreciated.
When I’m writing, I put songs on a loop, and music fades into the background. My “liked songs” has over nine hours’ worth of music in it. There are also playlists for my next two Harlequin releases.
